Martin Luther King Day

I found it to be very interesting when I talked to Ian & Leland about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I of course had to bring in down to their level. I searched and searched online for some activities for them. My kids are hands on learners so I figure projects would be the best thing.

We started out reading the book

While we read through the book we talked about who Martin Luther King Jr. was, how he wanted everyone to treated equally and that no matter what we looked like on the outside, we are all the same on the inside.

"Mommy I have friends at school that have different skin colors and I still play super heroes with them on the playground"
-Ian
I told him that was awesome and that is exactly one of things Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted. He wanted all of us to have the opportunity to play together!

This was the part of the book I liked the most. I asked the boys what was difference between all of Little Bill's friends and Ian told me there was no difference because they were all the same on the inside. I guess he got the concept.

Then of course they wanted to watch Little Bill so we had some lunch in the family room watching Little Bill!

Another thing I found were these great print out booklets about Martin Luther King Jr. on this great site called Teachers Pay Teachers you can join for free and they have several things you can download at no cost. You can also pay for a membership to access several other resources.  I went with the basic free membership since I'm not a teacher and only plan to use it once in awhile. It has tons of great things though!

The the booklet I printed was called Martin Luther King Reader you can print it in color or in black and white. I did the black and white so the boys could color it.

All and all it was a fun day!
I don't really know how much they got out of the day because to them, everyone is the same!
That to me is exactly what I would like them to understand.
