May Day

Happy May Day!

When I was younger we celebrated the 1st of May every year. It was called May Day. I'm from Iowa originally and when I grew up, got married and moved to Michigan, people thought I was nuts when I would ask if they were doing May baskets.

Finally, this year I decided that we are going to make them! Still even in Idaho no one knew what I was talking about. I just remember how much fun it was to make the baskets and delivering them my friends in the neighborhood & I wanted to enjoy that with boys.

For those of you that still don't understand what "May Day Baskets" are... They are just hand made baskets with some popcorn, candie, maybe some flowers from your yard. The point  is, you don't spend a dime on them. Just make the baskets with that you have in your craft basket & then make some popcorn or pick some flowers around the yard. I think I remember one year we even picked some dandelions. HaHaHa

First we found all our supplies

Then started coloring!

Basically what you do to create an easy basket out of construction paper is cut 4 slits - 2 on each side about 1/4 of the way up the sheet.

Fold the flaps inward and tape.

Fold the last flaps upward and tape.

Then we used pipe cleaners to add a handle (keep in mind, they are not very durable so when you fill them up with goodies you, should hold the bottom of the basket when you carry it)

I just poked the pipe cleaner through the side of the construction paper and did the same on the other side.

There you go, 1 completed May Day Basket!

Now for the best part! The goodies!

Jelly Beans

Popcorn!

& Licorice!

We do have one Glutton Free friend so even though Popcorn is technically glutton free, there are some brands of popcorn that contain some kind of glutton in the process of flavoring and packaging. So to be on the safe side we used Pirate's Booty!

We lined up the baskets and started filling!

We did have to make as second batch of popcorn because we couldn't stop eating it.
Thank goodness we had 2 large bags of jelly beans & liquorish!

Once the bags were finished, we headed out to drop them off!
When we were kids, the idea was to set them at the door or hang them on the handle, ring the door dell and run. Then the person answering the door had to try and catch you. If they caught you, they kissed you. I don't think we ever did that part. HaHaHa I'm guessing we just ran the bell and ran.

Happy May Day!
